Follow this trail. E&P publishes a story about an L.A. Times story, which itself is an examination of the Rove Plame-gate story, which was investigated by the terribly hot Matt Cooper of Time Magazine.
Why is this interesting? Because the revelations about Rove and Scooter Libby violating Federal Law and jeopardizing national security were made public this summer, as opposed to last summer. Why? Because Time Magazine did not want to influence the Presidential election.
All I can say is, holy fuck.
Not until this summer did Cooper ask Rove for a waiver to talk to the grand jury, and ultimately the public, about their conversation. The L.A. Times article today notes that he did not do this before “because his lawyer advised against it.” But the reporters add that in addition, “Time editors were concerned about becoming part of such an explosive story in an election year.”Yes, you read that correctly. Time Magazine did not publish a news story in the public interest because it might have reflected poorly on the incumbent President and influenced the election.
The story concludes: "The result was that Cooper's testimony was delayed nearly a year, well after Bush's reelection."
Would it have affected the election? Probably. Remember, Chimpy "won" by something like a hundred thousand votes (don't recall the exact figure right now). Now we see Bush's approval rating in the 30's, and clearly if the election were held now, he would lose badly.
The net result is that Time held off on a story and the wrong man won. Try and tell me the right wing doesn't own the media. For fucks sake this is incredible.
Really, the major problem with the media today is that they try to be "fair and balanced" to the point that they lie about the side that is factually wrong in order to make it seem that both sides are just different points of view.
Example - read just about any story on the teaching of "intelligent design" in public schools. The media factually equates the two "theories". Evolution has been proven scientifically, and creationism is based on religion, or "belief" - or in my words, made up bullshit. The media, in it's efforts not to offend the crazy people, linguistically (is that a word?) massage their news reports in order to give the appearance that evolution is simply a "belief" as well.
The media used to be the watch dogs of the public interest. For good or bad, they told us what the facts were when they knew them. Today, the media will withhold news in order to keep the American public from formulating an opinion based on the facts. We can't even really call it news reporting anymore. It's just information entertainment.
mmmmm...
