Quote of the Day

You were wondering why we had a “National Guard?” You were wondering why we have a gummint? "We need a ton of help. We could use National Guard units," said one Biloxi officer who said he was not authorized to give his name, here. Sorry sir, but I’m sure you’ll be pleased to know that the Guard is doing its new job over in Iraq; that is killing people, getting killed themselves, creating more hatred and terrorism, as well as an Islamic Republic, and finding no weapons of mass destruction. Oh by the way, you’re not going to get much money either. That’s over in Iraq too. Why do Biloxi officers who are not authorized to give their names hate America?
From Eric Alterman's blog.

The disaster in NO is going to be huge news 24/7 for quite a while. I predict this is essentially going to destroy what's left of the Bush administration.

And everything that is going on fits perfectly into the Bush agenda. It's always been about oil, and the prices will continue to go up and up and up.

What will the net effect be in the long run? Not much. I expect the Republicans will be hurt in the next 2 election cycles, but remember - always - Americans are really stupid people, and the religious freak show will get the whole Republican machine back on track before too long.

America is simply not a nation of culture and intellectualism. Sad, but true.
