Quote of the Day II

"It's puzzling that while Newsweek now acknowledges that they got the facts wrong, they refused to retract the story," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said. "I think there's a certain journalistic standard that should be met and in this instance it was not."

"The report has had serious consequences," McClellan said. "People have lost their lives. The image of the United States abroad has been damaged."
Okay.. I admit it. I'm here at work, having a tasty chicken salad sandwich and diet coke for lunch.. and I read that quote and I want to stand up and start screaming...

** update **

Thinking a bit more about this.. and wondering why the WH is pushing it so hard instead of letting it die. Does unka Karl really believe the story is untrue, and there are no other stories of abuse to publish? Was he sending a message to the MSM that if you publish those types of stories, it will cause riots? Should that matter?

This administration has been very effective in attacking the media. So far, they have been able to get away with it. I get the feeling that the media may just turn on them.

Here's a question for you would-be managing editors. Your ace reporter brings you a story that connects-the-dots. It proves that Bush was intent on attacking Iraq regardless of any provocation, or lack thereof. It proves the military is infested by evangelical Christians. It proves that the the motivations behind the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are religiously motivated, and we are indeed on a new "crusade".

Do you publish that story?
