Americans at fault

Those of us on the left have long known the Iraq war was never about WMD's, or 9/11, or Iraq posing an "imminent threat". All of that has been shown to be total bullshit by every government report.

It's just rather weird when British government documents come to light detailing that the Bush administration had planned and determined they were invading a full year before the invasion.

Clearly, everything we were told was an unmitigated lie - and the Brit intelligence report shows that.

But - it's not mentioned here in the "main stream media" and American's don't care.. Why? Because American's, for the first time in the history of the world, are fighting a war without being inconvenienced by it. Never has a nation been so powerful that it can engage fully on the battlefield and it not have a single impact on the citizens back home.

That is truly amazing.

I'd like to say that it's a huge character flaw in the American culture, but it's really a human thing, and not an American thing. It is human nature to have very little empathy for something that doesn't affect us directly.

So - we have all the facts before us. The year is 2005, and we know for a fact that our President lied us into a war. We know that every single justification proved to be false. We have BRITISH INTELLIGENCE documents showing a conspiracy to make the evidence fit the plan.

Is there a reaction? No.. American's don't care. Isn't that bizarre beyond words?

If this had happened 30 years ago, wouldn't there be a demand for an impeachment? Certainly Vietnam was a bad idea, but at least they sold it as a campaign to stop the spread of communism, and that's really what is was about, even if we did lose the war.

Now we have all the facts. We know the President lied. Well, it wasn't just the President, it was the entire administration. We know they had decided to invade and fixed everything else around it. What we were told was patently false, and intentional lying to get American's psyched up about killing Muslims.

And nothing..

I'm completely flabbergasted. Thousands upon thousands are dead, and George Bush is awash in a sea of their blood.

And nothing..

For those who care, a snip of the report..

What the minutes clearly show is that Bush and Blair secretly agreed to wage war for "regime change" nearly a year before the invasion -- and months before they asked the United Nations Security Council to support renewed weapons inspections as an alternative to armed conflict. The minutes also reveal the lingering doubts over the legal and moral justifications for war within the Blair government.

But for Americans, the most important lines in the July 23 minutes are those attributed to Sir Richard Dearlove, the head of the British Secret Intelligence Service, or MI6, who in spy jargon is to be referred to only as "C." The minutes indicate that Sir Richard had discovered certain harsh realities during a visit to the United States that summer:

"C reported on his recent talks in Washington. There was a perceptible shift in attitude. Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy. The NSC had no patience with the U.N. route ... There was little discussion in Washington of the aftermath after military action."
While I'm ranting about this, remember Joseph Wilson? Remember Valerie Plame?

Who the fuck in the Administration is going to apologize to Joseph Wilson? Who is going to say "you were right all along, we're sorry". They attacked the man unmercifully. They revealed his wife's covert CIA identity.

All because Joseph Wilson spoke the truth.

There has never been a bigger scumbag in the White House. Never.

Interesting post. Amazed the memo has had no play over there. But then it didn't drum up much interest over here as it was overshadowed by the ongoing saga of the legal advice.

I agree with your interpretation of the apathy and lack of empathy. I would suggest that those who do feel it most are the families of the service men and women who are over there. I believe that one of the reasons that so many of these families support the war is due to their loyalty to their kin and also that to demean the war would be to suggest that their kin were taking part in some unlawful and immoral venture. Not the only reason mind you and possibly not even the biggest one.

Just one note, Valerie Plame is not Richard Clarke's wife. She is the wife of former ambassador Joseph Wilson. he is the one who helped discredit the links between Niger, Uranium and Iraq.

Yes, you're correct. Believe it or not, I do know the difference between the two. I was rushing. :)

In any case, thank you and I stand corrected.
