What the #$*! Do We Know!?

Everyone one needs to see this film; What the #$*! Do We Know!? It might be titled What the Bleep Do We Know!? as well.

The film attempts to explain the nature of the universe. Perhaps it's bigger point is that we cannot explain the nature of the universe.

The fundamental topic the film explores is quantum physics. If you're not a PhD in theoretical physics, you might want to read here before you see the film for some background on the concepts of quantum physics.

The basic idea is that nothing really exists until it is observed. Everything is just a probability, and that probability becomes a reality when an observer notices it. The film does take one giant leap that I don't necessarily agree with. They posit that the human consciousness can effect the probability of sub-atomic particles. I think that's a violation of quantum mechanics.

An example would be flipping a coin. What determines which side is up? There has to be rules behind that determination. That's quantum physics in action. The state of the matter that makes up the coin has a probability of interacting in one way or the other in this example. The filmmakers would have us believe that through human consciousness, we can affect probability. In other words, thought could affect the chances on the coin flip, but in reality, it's always 50/50.

But.. then.. you go a little bit deeper "in the rabbit hole" as they say. Is there an effect from positive thinking? Most people would say yes. Therefore, if you extrapolate it out, that since everything in the universe is nothing but probability, the mere acceptance that a thought could have a consequence, that thought had to have affected a probability at some point. Therefore, thoughts can affect probability at any point once you understand the rules of how it works.

While physics is often a really dry topic, the film extrapolates it into the meaning of biology and spirituality. If I had to describe what my version of spirituality is, this film comes the closest to doing that.

The consequences of quantum physics?

Your consciousness affects the behavior of subatomic particles

- or -

Particles move backwards as well as forwards in time and appear in all possible places at once

- or -

The universe is splitting, every Planck-time (10 E-43 seconds) into billions of parallel universes

- or -

The universe is interconnected with faster-than-light transfers of information

You absolutely must watch the film - no if's/and's/but's.

A quote from the film I found interesting:

When I talk about "We" disappearing I don't mean we physically disappear. What I mean is that we move out of the area of the brain that has to do with our personality, that has to do with our association to people, our association to places, our association to things and times and events. We don't exist in the associative centers in our brain that reaffirms our identity and reaffirms our personality.

For the average person in the world who lives life and considers their life boring or uninspiring, it's because they've made no attempt to gain knowledge and information that will inspire them. They're so hypnotized by their environment through the media, through television, through people living and creating ideals that everybody struggles to become, that no one can actually become - in terms of physical appearance and definitions of beauty and valor, that are all illusions, that most people surrender and live their lives in mediocracy. And they may live that life and the soul may never really - their desire may never really rise to the surface, so they may want to be something else. But, if it does rise to the surface and they ask themselves if there is something more. Or, why am I here? What is the purpose of life? Where am I going? What happens when I die? They start to ask those questions. They start to flirt and interact with the perception that they may be having a nervous breakdown. And in reality, what they're doing is that their old concepts of how they viewed their life and the world start to fall apart.
Another quote from the film that I jotted down.

Show me a sign today that you paid attention to any of these things that I created, and bring them in a way that I won't expect, so I'm as surprised at my ability to be able to experience these things, and make it so that I have no doubt that it's come from you.
