That's not terribly interesting. What is interesting is all the comments in support of said douchebag, when it is suggested that the top 1% of Americans see their taxes go back to the rate they were before Bush. Note - this is not at all the tax rates the top 1% paid during the Reagan administration.. they are quite a bit better.
In fact, it's about a 2% increase in their taxes.
Someone could do a sociology thesis on this phenomenon of "middle class" people being upset that the very wealthy end up paying a larger share of the tax burden. I can't imagine why they are upset.
Brad DeLong does the math.
.....
This is not to say that people who make half a million, or more, a year don't have financial issues or problems. It's just that they are often disconnected from the real world. The average income in the US is 50k. People making 50k are fabulously wealthy relative to the rest of the world.
People making 500k, are monumentally wealthy.
I understand that letting the tax cuts expire will impact me and John. Unlike Prof. DeLong, we go out for $200+ meals fairly often, though we've started cutting back on that a bit. We can do this because we don't pay 60k in private school tuition.
I also understand that 2% isn't going to change anyone's lifestyle when you're making over 250k a year. The jackass making 500K and claims to be living paycheck to paycheck might notice it.. but that's because he's a dumbass to be living that way.
I really am bewildered by people who make an "average" income that are incensed that very wealthy people might be paying more in taxes. If you read the comments, it's not just that they disagree... but.. here's a good example;
Apparently you can’t read. As the author and his wife pay in federal taxes more than what most people earn in one year. Who are you asking to pay up? Maybe you should cease being a parasite and pay up yourself.
I can understand that people never appreciate a tax increase, but federal spending has to be paid for. Shouldn't they be a little more upset about the 3 trillion thrown away in Iraq instead? Might not need a tax increase if we stopped doing stupid shit like that.
Just a thought..
