NEW YORK – Former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw and his wife said they escaped injury in a three-car accident on a New York City highway that killed a 30-year-old woman and injured a mail truck driver Friday afternoon.
The accident happened about 1 p.m. as Brokaw was driving in the left lane of the northbound Bruckner Expressway in the Bronx.
Police and the Brokaws said a 1998 Ford Expedition swerved to avoid a spool of cable bouncing in the far right lane, which caused the driver of the SUV to lose control.
The Expedition overturned and then collided with the mail truck, police said. Suejas Estrada of the Bronx was thrown from the Expedition and killed. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
I absolutely cannot ride in a car without a seat belt on. If I drive even from my garage to mail box in front to grab mail on my way out, it feels very uncomfortable to not have the belt on.
I just wish they would redesign the belts. They are too abrasive and narrow. They definitely help prevent very serious injuries and fatalities, but they can also cause damage. If the force of impact were spread over a wider surface area, the belt injuries would be reduced substantially.
It also bugs me to read stories like this. Some poor woman was simply driving on a freeway, and apparently the negligence of some asshole to secure the cabling caused her life to suddenly be over.
One second you're just driving along.. the next, dead.
