They're really charming, aren't they? It is as if everything arrogant about the academy and everything sneering about cable news culture is combined into one big snarky smugfest. Maybe these atheists will indeed help push back the fundamentalist right. Maybe they will remind people that between these atheist bigots and these fundamentalist bigots, the appeal of the Christianity of the Gospels shines like the sun. - Andrew Sullivan
Sullivan in a snit over noted philosopher and atheist Daniel Dennett, pointing out some of the absurdities of theism.
Sully gets twisted in the method that Dennett employs in stating the obvious, rather than addressing the content of what he's saying. Truly, Sullivan is saying that Dennet is wrong, not because of what he's saying, but because he's a Blue Meanie when saying it.
Sully doesn't get it that the "New Atheists" are not trying to "push back" any religious fundamentalists. They can't be moved. They're trying to reach a population that is open to reason over superstition.
Sullivan is so fucking emo it's hilarious. People like that can never make reasoned assessments of.. really anything. As soon as the emo waves it's magic hands in front of people like Sullivan, everything rational goes right out the window.
It's his magical "Center"... half-way between whack job religious freaks, and the smug Atheists, is the Jesus of the Gospels, and that's inherently the right point of view for everyone.. because it's the "center".
What a jackass.
