Bush = God

So, I was looking at some polling - congressional races, state races, and the approval rating for the chimp-in-chief. He's still stuck in the low 30's, which you know, is about where Nixon was at when he resigned..

I don't suppose this is profound or anything, and it's probably said better by other people, but I really don't think it's possible for Bush to drop below 30% in the polls. As we've seen, there is about 20% of the American population that is convinced that Bush is Jesus Christ. I'm not talking literally, but the two share the same reverence among the Christians. I don't know if it's ever happened in American politics before where to merely be opposed to a politician means that you are opposed to Jesus Christ himself. Hence, because Jesus can do no wrong, neither can Bush. Religious people are trained to rationalize away any contradictions to the theological order, and in Bush, that is the new political order.

So, why Bush? Because Bush has reinforced what is normally a shaky foundation. He has quite literally said "I will shape America as you think it should be". Conservative Christians that are frightened by cultural evolution embrace that vision and chance to prove to a decadent America that they were right! Therefore, to criticize Bush is to criticize their whole philosophy of culture, and their entire religion. No other politician has tied himself to Jesus so closely.

Meanwhile, this nation is at a low point that I've never seen in my lifetime. Why? Because the conservative Christians got what they wanted, and it proved to be a disaster.

But Tom, you may say, if 20% of the American population would agree that the sky is green because Bush told them it is, why can't his polling drop below 30%? Simple - 10% of the American public is not paying attention and has no idea what is going on.

There is an up-side coming I think. If the Democrats win Congress this fall, and the executive in '08, we can stop all these freak initiatives, and get back to some rational government based on a solid liberal philosophy. Americans will see the contrast I think, and hopefully our culture will mature beyond this hysterical ranting of the Christian loonies.
