America's Team

I really like following the Dallas Cowboys, because it's such a drama sometimes. This week, DeMarcus Ware got his new contract. The terms are something like.. the rest of his career will be in Dallas.. he'll get paid a bazillion dollars, and something like 40 million of it is guaranteed. I'm pretty sure his agent pushed to get it done quicker by dropping their asking price as it appeared he wasn't going to get 20 sacks again this year. I don't get why people are paid so much for one phase of a game, but he is a really good player.. and apparently Jerry Jones likes him, so the money isn't a big deal.

Roy Williams was brought in from Detroit last year in exchange for a bunch of draft picks, and got a big contract. Miles Austin has more yards and touchdowns in 2 games then Williams has in a season and a half.

Reading on the cowboys web site, it seems that not only is Austin now a starter, he's become "number 1". Williams is saying all the right things, admitting that he's playing like shit.. yadda yadda. Thing is.. there's a lot of luck in football. As I said before, I've always known that Austin had top flight skill, but a lot of it is Romo too.

Austin, like Williams, is saying all the right things to the press. However, he needs to lose the kid-in-a-candy-store shtick and act like he's a starting NFL receiver, not surprised that he's actually playing well. As soon as everyone crowns him the new Terrel Owens, they'll write him off as a flash in the pan as soon as he has a bad day.

Still, it's hard not to be a fan of this giant smile he constantly has going. It honestly looks like his dreams are coming true, and it's impossible not to like a guy like that. Terrel Owens scores a touch down and starts throwing down popcorn from a fan.. whereas Austin has this "is this really me?" thing going on in the end zone. It's infectious. And of course.. I predicted it all.. just ask John.. I've been saying that Austin had all the tools for a few years now. I'm glad he's making it happen.

Winning in the NFL is all about consistency.. never too high or too low, but just solid performance week in and week out. The Cowboys definitely have the skill and potential to be like the consistent teams Troy Aikman helmed in the 90's, but they need to shave off the peaks and valleys.

Oh.. and isn't Troy Aikman the best announcer in the NFL?

....

I was just looking at the player bios, and all 5 starters on the offensive line are over 30 years old. That's old in the NFL, where I think the average career span is something like 2 or 3 years. The Cowboys really have nobody in the pipeline to step in and play at that level. They could have used those draft picks they gave away for Roy Williams to get some quality young talent. It's probably going to be the most pressing issue in next year's draft.
